Everybody has experienced a few rotator cuff tear problems in their lifetime, while most of these tears can be repaired naturally at home, severe cases might require surgical treatment.

Rotator Cuff Tears are a significant cause of disability and pain amongst adults. A torn rotator cuff weakens the shoulder, restricting its movement, making it painful for the patient to perform daily tasks like getting dressed or combing their hair.

Human shoulder structure has three bones: Humerus (Upper arm bone), Scapula (Shoulder blade), and Clavicle (collarbone). The shoulder acts as a ball, providing a socket to join these bones. The joint allows these muscles to move using a rotator cuff. Rotator Cuff is made from 4 muscles, which help in moving, lifting and operating the arms.

Types of Rotator Cuff Tear

Most tendons begin with fraying, which gets worse with time, causing the tendon to tear completely. It is commonly caused because of lifting heavy objects.

Partial Tear – aka Incomplete tear is when the tendon gets damaged but is still not torn from the rotator.

Full-Thickness Tear – is when the tendons are entirely separated from rotator, that a hole is created in the tendon.

Reasons to get a Rotator Cuff Tear Surgery

Rotator cuffs are a group of muscles and tendons present in the shoulders. It allows movement in the arm. It is also responsible for keeping the shoulder joint in its place. But sometimes these tendons can be pinched down by the bones that it controls.

Most partial or minor rotator cuff tears can be treated with bed rest and by icing the affected area, but some patients might also experience intense pain, that can be countered using pain-relieving medicines like naproxen, aspirin, and ibuprofen. These medicines help in removing the symptoms of the tear, by reducing inflammation.

Physical therapy is also considered very useful for regaining the strength of the shoulders while allowing its muscles to relax to recover faster.

Types of Rotator Cuff Tear Surgery

Both these surgeries can be performed on an outpatient basis, and are done using general anaesthesia, which put the patient to sleep throughout the surgery.

Arthroscopic Repair – In this procedure one or more small incisions are made on the patient’s skin, which is used for inserting an arthroscope (a tiny medical camera) using thin devices on the shoulder. Arthroscope allows the surgeons to see the damaged area at real-time view, allowing him to find the best alternatives to fix them.

Open Tendon Repair – This is the traditional method of treating cuff tears. Now, it is only used for treating large or complicated rotator cuff tears.   In this surgery, a large incision is drawn on the patient’s shoulder so that the surgeon can attain direct access to his/her tendons. This procedure is commonly used for shoulder joint replacement.
